How to choose ABA therapy in the Austin area

A practical way to narrow your list, compare how care works, and decide when no option has everything.

The short version

  • Check location, coverage, and openings first.
  • Compare how each remaining provider runs care.
  • Ask each provider the same questions.
  • Be cautious with any promised result.

Start with what can rule a provider out

Before comparing approaches, find out which providers could work for your family. These checks can shorten a long list quickly.

  • Location and setting. Check the drive at your real drop-off and pickup times, and ask whether care is offered at a clinic, at home, or both.
  • Coverage. Ask whether the provider is in network with your exact plan and who handles authorizations.
  • Openings. Ask what is open now, how any waitlist works, and whether you can apply elsewhere at the same time.
  • Age. Confirm the provider serves your child’s age now, and ask what happens as your child gets older.

Then compare how care works

With a shorter list, look at what daily care would be like. Our printable question guide has the exact wording. These are the areas to compare.

  • Supervision. Who designs the plan, who delivers it, and how those people stay connected.
  • Sessions. How much is play, what the room looks like, and whether you can see it first.
  • Your child’s voice. What staff do when a child says no, needs a break, or communicates without spoken words.
  • Progress. What data is recorded and how you will see it.
  • Family role. How often you hear from the team and how you learn to support skills at home.

When no option has everything

Many families end up choosing between good but imperfect options. This table can help you turn a trade-off into a specific question.

Promises to question

Nobody can know how a child will progress before getting to know that child. Take extra time if you hear a guaranteed result, a firm recommendation made before any assessment, or pressure to decide on the spot. A provider can be honest about what it does not know yet, and that answer can be useful.
